Lou's Bio

Lou Walinsky has worked as a jazz and pop pianist/keyboard player for over thirty years in a wide variety of settings, working with ensembles and giving solo concerts.  He has also taught music in the School District of Philadelphia, led piano improvisation workshops for musicians and the general public, performed music programs for children, and has taught piano privately.

Currently, Lou continues to work as a free-lance solo and ensemble pianist/keyboard player in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area and to lead his own jazz ensemble.  He teaches piano and keyboard privately, and teaches music part-time at the Small World Discovery Center.

Lou Walinsky first studied classical piano as a child and teenager in Philadelphia with Max Koffs and Sara Freed, and graduated from Temple University with a B.A. He then studied in New York City at the Dalcroze School of Music and with jazz and composition teachers Jimmy Giuffre, Roland Hanna, and Frank Wigglesworth. He later returned to Philadelphia and completed coursework for his Pennsylvania State Music Teacher Certification K-12 from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. More recently, he has studied the Taubman technique with pianist Sheila Paige.
